Story
Sardar Krishnaji Kashinath ‘Nanasaheb’ Khasgiwale saw public Ganesh celebrations in Maratha-ruled Gwalior and described them to his friend Bhau Rangari — the conversation that sparked India’s sarvajanik Ganeshotsav. In 1892, three idols were installed publicly in Pune: Bhau Rangari’s, Ganpatrao Ghotawadekar’s, and Khasgiwale’s own. In the festival’s earliest processions, Khasgiwale’s Ganpati went first — before Tilak reorganised the honours around Kasba Ganpati and the Manache order was born. Visiting this mandal is visiting the festival’s origin story.
