Story
The Twashta Kasar Samaj Sanstha — Pune’s hereditary community of coppersmiths from Tambat Ali, descendants of Twashta, son of Vishwakarma — began its Ganeshotsav in 1894. Its idol, carved in 1904 from Shami tree wood and installed by Lokmanya Tilak, is unlike any other in the city: the curved trunk, the crown believed to draw in the sky’s positive energy, the fact that it was a gift. After each festival the idol returns to the community’s library building in Kasba Peth until the next year. Dekhavas often showcase the community’s metalcraft heritage — copper, brass, and silverware spanning generations.
