Story
Before sarvajanik Ganpati, celebrations were private — family mandaps behind closed doors. Bhausaheb Laxman Javale, known as Bhau Rangari — royal physician, freedom fighter, and dyer of Maharashtrian sarees — changed that in 1892 after his friend Nanasaheb Khasgiwale described public celebrations he had seen in Gwalior. The idol installed that year, showing Ganesha striking down a demon, was made of wood and paper pulp and is still worshipped today — a symbol of ending the injustices of colonial rule. Tilak praised the initiative in Kesari in 1893 and took the movement city-wide. Visit here to understand why Pune treats processions as inheritance, not entertainment.
