Story
Dagdusheth Halwai, a sweetmaker, and his wife Laxmibai established this Ganpati in 1893 after losing their son to plague — advised by their guru to worship Ganesha and Datta as their own children. What began as personal devotion grew into the most famous Ganesh temple in Pune, drawing over a lakh visitors daily during the festival. The gold-adorned idol, the Ganpati Bhavan, the sheer scale of darshan — this is where many newcomers first feel the weight of Pune’s devotion. It sits outside the Manache sequence but inside every Punekar’s map of the festival.
During the festival
Major aagman processions on Chaturthi — Ramanbaug and other headline pathaks perform here. Elaborate temple-replica decorations each year.
Visit
Extremely crowded on Chaturthi and weekends. Metro to Mandai, then walk. Avoid driving into Budhwar Peth.
Long queues are normal — darshan management is organised but patience is required.
